Marcus Steel
Marcus Steel studied silversmithing and jewellery design at Loughborough College of Art. Since graduating in 1981, he has taught at several art colleges and universities on both undergraduate and postgraduate design programmes and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally.
He is a highly gifted and versatile artist and designer working across a wide variety of projects of varying scale and material, designing and manufacturing sophisticated items that range from jewellery pieces and site specific art works to bespoke furniture and lighting. He has created mirrored screens and large silverware pieces for private and corporate clients including several high-end London restaurants.
He calls his recent works ‘Pyxsedes’ from decorative vessels in the Classical world that were used to store precious objects. They are beautifully conceived and made sculptural vessels inspired by his ongoing interest in ancient and modern architectural styles and details from vernacular and industrial sources that hint at a sense of function. Made from patinated and painted metal, they are playful and intriguing pieces that call out to be touched and opened to reveal what’s hidden inside.
