Mary Godfrey
Mary Godfrey is a textile designer and weaver. She was born and grew up in London and in the 1970s studied art foundation at Bradford College of Art followed by Textile Design at Leeds University. She was awarded a scholarship by the Worshipful Company of Weavers, and with the support of a Crafts Council grant she then set up a weaving studio in Hebden Bridge, specialising in hand-woven fine silk fabrics.
A few years later a chance encounter took her on a different and very diverse career path that lasted for over thirty years encompassing museum and gallery curator, graphic and product designer, creative director and director of organisational design and development for a family business in North Yorkshire.
Now she has returned to her first career choice and has set up her studio to explore and develop original hand woven textiles.
Her designs are informed by her interest in historic weaving techniques, art and the forms and shapes of modern architecture which naturally lend themselves to the vertical and horizontal structures created on a weaving loom.
