Mark Hearld
We got to know Mark around the year 2000. He had been coming to visit the gallery as a student while studying illustration at the RCA. We were immediately taken by his work, the observation of nature, his drawing skills and his interests that chimed with ours.
We were very pleased to give Mark his first commercial gallery exhibition in 2002.
Since then we have always had Mark’s work in our exhibitions and watched him develop into the acclaimed and versatile artist that he is today. A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art, he is best known for his distinctive mixed-media collages, though he also works across linocut and lithographic printing, painting, ceramics, and textiles.
Deeply inspired by the flora and fauna of the British countryside, his work often features motifs of animals such as foxes, hen runs, songbirds and his beloved lurcher dogs, Brio and Damsel, rendered in a bold, dynamic style that combines careful observation with an expressive use of form and pattern. Mark's aesthetic is influenced by mid-20th-century British artists like Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious, as well as folk art and Neo-Romanticism. He views himself as an artist-designer, often collaborating on a range of commercial projects, from book illustrations to fabrics and wallpapers and most recently, a tapestry of one of his collages, made at the Dovecot Studio in Edinburgh.
For our exhibition this year, working with a small production pottery in Stoke on Trent, Mark has designed and produced a series of commemorative Tankards for our 40th anniversary.

40th Anniversary Tankard
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Godfrey & Watt, Mark suggested that we commission a tankard featuring his signature paper cuts. It was a brilliant idea, and Mark added to the magic by hand painting every one with coloured glazes before the bird transfer was applied and the tankard was fired. This means that each is a completely unique object.
