Will Maclean
Will Maclean MBE RSA RGI RSW was born in Inverness in 1941 into a family of fishermen. He is a painter, printmaker and sculptor whose work is often related to the history and culture of the Scottish Highlands with particular reference to maritime themes. As one of the most distinguished of Scottish artists he has received numerous awards including the Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award in 2000 and an MBE in 2005. He is Emeritus Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Dundee.
His work is in major collections around the world and he exhibits with The Fine Art Society in Edinburgh and Galerie Herold in Hamburg.
Over the last five decades he has made 'box constructions', assemblages of found and constructed objects, and he is perhaps the greatest exponent of this form. Recent work has included large public art installations in Aberdeen the the Isle of Lewis in collaboration with his wife the artist Marian Leven. They were the 2025 winners of the PSSA Marsh award for excellence in public sculpture for their stone sculpture in the Galson Community on the Isle of Lewis.
