Welcome to our website
Godfrey & Watt is mainly an online gallery, showing work by a small group of artists and makers.
A brief history…
Godfrey & Watt was started in 1985 by artist Alex Godfrey and textile designer Mary Godfrey, in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
We both had experience of working in the arts and had connections with many artists and makers. Alex was in charge of touring the Scottish Crafts Collection, and Mary ran the Cleveland Crafts Centre in Middlesbrough which housed the county's ceramic and jewellery collections.
We opened the gallery with the aim of showcasing the best quality of work by artists and makers throughout the UK. We absolutely loved organising exhibitions and meeting and welcoming customers to the two gallery spaces we had in Harrogate town centre. Initially we concentrated on three-dimensional work. Ceramics in particular was our main interest for many years and we showed work by Takeshi Yasuda, Colin Pearson, Mick Casson, Morgen Hall, David Lloyd Jones and most frequently Richard Batterham and John Maltby.
We had many exhibitions of bird sculptures by Guy Taplin, etchings by Norman Ackroyd and Piers Browne and had several exhibitions of work by the great Scottish artist - Alan Davie.
Printmaking was a special interest of ours too, especially wood engraving. We discovered the work of Edwina Ellis before we opened the gallery and we had great success with her prints and also had brilliant work from a strong group of engravers – Anne Desmet, Peter Forster, Kathleen Lindsley, Paul Kershaw, Howard Phipps, Simon Brett and many others.
In 2002 we gave Mark Hearld his first commercial gallery exhibition and he has exhibited with us every year since. We have had another very strong group of artists, many of whom come out of a background of illustration; Emily Sutton, Angie Lewin, Mick Manning, Brita Granström, Angela Harding; all of these have become regular exhibitors with us.
After 25 very busy years we closed our town centre gallery in April 2010 so that Alex could spend more time developing his own work, but we didn’t want to lose touch with our artists and customers, many of whom had become our friends. So Godfrey and Watt relocated to our home, and has continued to have an annual exhibition with a group of artists in our home and online.
This November Godfrey & Watt is celebrating our 40th Year with a special Anniversary exhibition. It will include work by artists we have not shown for many years including some of our very first exhibitors such as engravers Edwina Ellis and Anne Desmet (RA), bird carver Guy Taplin and jeweller Deborah Boyd Whyte.
