Deborah Boyd Whyte
We have known Deborah Boyd Whyte since the earliest days of our gallery. Deborah, who comes from Yorkshire, had recently returned from Berlin where she was apprenticed to a goldsmith. She walked through our door in 1985 with a collection of exquisite gold and silver jewellery which our customers found irresistible.
She subsequently worked as an independent jeweller in Los Angeles and Edinburgh. After 2010 she focused increasingly on visual art – wonderful abstract large scale drawings and paintings. For the last five years she has been working with ceramics, mostly fine porcelain pieces which we have exhibited in our past few Christmas exhibitions.
Now, especially for our 40th Anniversary exhibition, Deborah has returned to making jewellery.
This collection uses repurposed and recycled materials - gold, silver, glass, and recycled semiprecious stones. The designs revisit starting positions developed forty years ago in Berlin, employing fundamental metal working skills such as casting, forming, soldering, hammering, and texturing. Mixed precious metals emphasise these designs and processes and also play with notions of value.
Selected exhibitions:
RSA Exhibition, (Online), Edinburgh, 2025
SSA Exhibition, Edinburgh 2024
Godfrey and Watt, Harrogate, 2022
RSW, Edinburgh, 2017
Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh, 2016
Jerwood Prize Exhibition, London, 2016
A set of three exhibitions by Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) in Edinburgh: VAS:t in 2015, VAS:Converge in 2016, VAS:Fly in 2016.
