John Maltby – 1936 - 2020
Our great friend John Maltby passed away on 22 December. For over 30 years we were rarely without his work in the gallery and we had many spectacular exhibitions of his ceramics. It
is difficult to underestimate the influence he had on a very wide range of artists, students and collectors. We will miss him greatly.
John is recognised worldwide as one of Britain’s finest ceramic artists. Born in 1936, he studied sculpture at Leicester and Goldsmith’s College, London and worked with David Leach at his pottery before establishing his own workshop in 1964. He initially made domestic ceramics but since the mid seventies he made only individual pieces. His work is represented in many ceramic collections including the V&A.
We are grateful to Nigel Dutt for the photographs of John at work.
