Alex Malcolmson
Alex Malcolmson was born in Shetland in 1955 and studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He worked as a teacher and curator before establishing a gallery in Harrogate which he ran for 25 years - and still runs sporadically. Since 2010 he has concentrated on making sculpture and box constructions and sometimes painting.
He has exhibits regularly at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh, the Yew Tree Gallery in Cornwall, Godfrey & Watt in Harrogate. Other exhibitions include the Thompson Gallery and St Judes in London and Gallery Allmenningen in Bergen.
"Most of my work is in the form of box constructions made mainly from wood; carved and painted, sometimes using found materials. Joseph Cornell is an influence as is the period of Picasso's work around 1914 when he seemed to find everything he needed lying around on the studio floor, but other strands of interest lie in bird decoys, ship dioramas and other marine folk art. The sailing vessel is frequently the subject and the sea often provides the raw material."
