Emily Sutton
Emily Sutton is a highly acclaimed artist and illustrator known for her intricate and enchanting works that capture the charm of everyday life and the natural world.
Born in North Yorkshire, Emily studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design. We gave Emily her first exhibition in 2007.
Working in various mediums, including painting, printmaking, and textiles, she is inspired by mid 20th century artists and illustrators, folk art, her extensive collections of old toys and ephemera, and a love for the natural world.
Celebrated for her compelling storytelling and ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, Emily's work has been exhibited widely, including at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh and the V&A. She has also illustrated numerous children's books which have been translated into many languages around the world and collaborated with major brands like Fortnum & Mason and Bettys of Harrogate.
Emily lives and works in York with her dog Mouse.
Since 2018, Emily has been collaborating with Castle Howard to create an intricate and large scale artwork for their renowned annual Christmas event. The three pieces included in the our 40th Anniversary show are the outcomes of the most recent three years’ creative partnership.
