About the artist

Alan Davie was born in Scotland in 1920 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the late 1930s. A pioneer of abstract painting, he became one of the most highly regarded European artists of the post-war era. His work is included in numerous public and private collections, most notably Tate Britain, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Davie has created his own unique artistic language, which is related to the diversity of his interest in primitive art, Zen Buddhism, music and gliding. His work contains strong symbolic elements which relate to the very beginnings of art where shapes and signs carried great significance.
